Choosing a Dyson V-series Model

The Dyson V-series corded vacuums and 2-in-1’s are arguably the most popular models the company has produced to date. With 5 generations of the vacuums still on the market, it is no surprise they have a great following.

Here, I give you a brief overview of the three styles found within each series, the Motorhead, Animal and Absolute models. Note, not all V-series vacuums contain each model style.

Dyson Motorhead

The Motorhead is  the low-end of the three styles . It has a smaller collection bin than the other two models and in older generation models will also have a smaller battery.

The wand/tube color is usually red, but some generations alternated the colors. The biggest difference is the accessories. The Motorhead version comes with the direct drive cleaning head as well as a crevice tool, multi-nozzle attachment and the wall mount/charging dock.

Because it has less accessories, and smaller capabilities,  it is also the cheapest of the three styles .

Dyson Animal

The Animal,  also known in some areas as the Torque Drive , is the middle range of the three styles. It has the larger battery and bigger collection bin compared to the Motorhead. It is also the style that is not included in every generation.

For the version it is included, the wand/tube is generally purple and has more accessories compared to the Motorhead version.

With the Animal, you will get the torque drive cleaning head, crevice tool and multi-nozzle attachment, along with the wall mount/charging dock. However, you also get a mini motorized power cleaning head for upholstery and a dusting brush for fragile item cleaning (curtains, drapes, etc.).

The price increases with this model and  it is seen as the jack-of-all trades when all three models are compared . It doesn’t have much advantage over the Motorhead style, though, except in the V11 and V12 lines, where it has much more suction power.

Dyson Absolute

The Absolute style, then, is  the top of the line . It does cost more than the other two, but it outperforms in almost every category.

It comes with the larger battery and larger collection bin, like the Animal, and the wand/tube is generally gold. You can also find it in black and blue in some lines (V10 most notably).

The accessories, though, are what makes this model stand out. You get the torque drive cleaning head and the soft roller cleaning head. On older generations the soft roller is replaced with the direct drive cleaning head.

You also get the crevice tool, multi-nozzle attachment, wall mount/charging dock, dusting brush and mini motorized cleaning head.  For the consumer that needs the best, the Absolute is it.

However, for the additional cost, you can get the same performance without the soft roller head for a much lower price.

Dyson Vacuum Buyer’s Guide

Whether you pick a V-series of a Ball series, there are several factors about the vacuums that you should consider. Let me show you a brief guide to these factors.

Battery Power

While most Dyson Ball models are corded, the V-series and a few other Dyson vacuums run on battery power. However, there is a lot more going on here than you realize.

There are three battery settings for each model and they drastically alter the run time. First, you need to know about the recharging ability.

Each model, regardless of the mode you run the vacuum in,  will need about 4 to 5 hours to fully charge a drained battery .

Once fully charged you shouldn’t expect much from the vacuum’s battery life. On maximum power, the vacuum creates incredible suction, cleans any mess on any floor. But, the battery will only last, on average, about 5 to 7 minutes.

You can get between 11 and 19 minutes on medium setting and depending on the model, up to 25 minutes on low speed settings. In most cases, low speed is enough to clean your carpets and hard floors and without the power cord, 20+ minutes should be enough to clean your entire home.

Dyson has innovated the vacuum market with being the first to introduce cyclonic suction and airflow. Each year they also work to improve on it, creating more suction power.

Obviously,  the higher the motor speed and more airflow, the greater the suction will b e. However, all models are capable of cleaning your floors with enough suction to compete with standard, corded uprights and high-suction models at any time, in any mode.

Knowing the suction level measurements for your particular model, though, will help you make a final decision faster, based on your specific flooring needs.

Floor Type

The type of flooring throughout your home will also play a role in which model you choose. Hard flooring surfaces require a more delicate brushroll, or a power cleaning head that can be shut off.

Carpeting needs the agitation brush rolls provide to get deep into the fibers, lifting out dirt and debris.

While there are cleaning heads that are capable of doing both hard floors and carpets, you should make your choice based on the primary floor type and use any included accessories or features for the rest.

Dyson doesn’t generally skimp when it comes to accessories. This can be anything from an extra long power cord to a special cleaning tool included with the purchase. Different vendors will also carry different accessories.

For example, buying directly from Dyson will cost you more in the long run, but you can get up to 5 additional cleaning tools or a tool caddie with certain models by shopping there.

When making your selection, make sure to take note of what is included and find the best value for the accessories and the vacuum itself as possible by shopping around for that particular model.

Note: I have done the best to include the best deals with this factor included, but some deals are for a limited time or change based on availability.

Dyson Vacuum Price and Warranty

Dyson isn’t the cheapest vacuum on the market. However,  their cost is warranted by the durability and cleaning ability of the machines . With proper care and maintenance, it could possibly be the last vacuum you need to buy.

When looking for the best price, remember to keep the warranty in mind. Dyson warranties are thorough and easy to make claims with. However they are only valid if you purchase through authorized dealers.

It also matters if you buy new, used or refurbished models, too. Check the warranty details before you click that “buy now” button.

Top 8 Dyson Vacuums

Now I will outline our 8 favorite Dyson vacuums. Each one rated, reviewed and compared so you don’t have to. Read through the list and find the model that best suits your needs.

1. Best Price Dyson Vacuum – Dyson V6 Absolute

The Dyson V6 is  the first of the V series vacuums . The Absolute model is the top of this short run line and still holds a place in many homes today. Your home could be next.

It is no secret that the price tag on Dyson vacuums isn’t for every budget. However, with newer models being released, along with the age of the V6, the price of this model is now more affordable.

With a lower price tag the cleaner becomes more available for most budget ranges. It is also adept at cleaning all types of carpeting. With the direct drive roller, the bristles agitate carpet fibers and loosen deep embedded debris.

Low pile and medium pile carpet are no match for the direct drive cleaning head. For high-pile carpeting the soft roller cleaning head can be used  to get a decent clean on the surface.

When it comes to hard flooring, the direct drive can scratch some surfaces. The soft roller is best used on hard floors, but it may not pick up everything in a single or even double pass.

With your purchase, you get the V6 motor and cyclone system, plus all available tools. These tools include the crevice and combination brush, the small dusting brush and the miniature motorized cleaning head.  It also ships with a Dyson 5-year warranty.

2. Best Dyson Cordless Vacuum – Dyson V10 Absolute

The V10 series is seen as  the best of all the V-series vacuums . By that rational then, the V10 Absolute is the best of the best.

The redesign from the V8 model, places the collection chamber cones and filter inline with the handle,  increasing suction power and making the entire vacuum more efficient.

The one downside is that the inline arrangement makes the vacuum longer and slightly more awkward to hold. Once you become accustomed to it, though, the additional suction makes the negative aspect less notable.

The suction power, redesign and overall efficiency makes the  V10 the best Dyson vacuum for carpet and hard floor cleaning .

In just a single pass you will collect more debris than with two or more passes with any other model. The torque drive cleaning head is a beast on carpeting and will clean low, medium and high pile carpeting.

The soft roller with the additional suction power will take care of any hard floor surface without worry of scratching.

Included in the purchase you get all of the Absolute tools. The list includes the mini cleaning head, crevice and combination tools, and the dusting brush. As with all Dyson vacuums,  you also get the 5-year warranty .

3. Dyson V8 Absolute

Rounding out the top 3 Dyson vacuums is the V8 Absolute. With this model you get the old generation layout, with a perpendicular filter and cyclone suction compartment. The V8 lacks the additional power of the V10,  but increases battery and overall efficiency of the V6 and V7 models .

Like all Absolute models, you get two cleaning heads. In this case the direct drive and soft roller heads. You also get the Absolute model tool kit with the crevice and brush tools, mini handheld cleaning head and dusting brush.

The additional battery power over the V6 basically doubles the run time. Of course, this is when used in the lowest power setting. Like all other V-series models, when used on maximum power you are limited to about 9 minutes or less of runtime.

The  handheld mode of all V-series models makes the vacuum more versatile . You can remove the long cleaning wand and use the handheld cleaner to get your furniture, in your car or even above head cleaning.

4. Dyson V7 Motorhead

If you are looking for a  basic model to save money, but want more battery power  than the V6 models can offer, then the V7 Motorhead is a decent option.

Here you only get one cleaning head, the direct drive head. You also have access to less accessories. The V7 Motorhead includes only the crevice toll and the combination brush tool.

You do get a battery that can last up to 30 minutes and the same suction power as the V6. This effectively makes the V7 more efficient. However, it is the worst of the V-series vacuums on hard flooring.

If your home is primarily carpeting, the V7 motorhead is a great option. You can save quite a bit of money and achieve exceptionally clean carpets. If you find you need more cleaning power for your hard flooring, you can also buy the soft roller cleaning head separately.

5. Best Dyson Upright Vacuum – Dyson Ball Animal 2

Moving away from the V-series models, the Dyson Ball series is one of the first major advancements in upright vacuum cleaners. The ball works to roll over any flooring surface without getting hung up.

The pivoting ball allows you to maneuver around any obstacle and won’t scratch any hard flooring surface. The direct drive head isn’t replaceable, but is adept at cleaning all floor types.

The  Ball series uprights have more suction power than almost every other vacuum currently available in the market . The cyclone suction power was first introduced in the Dyson Ball series and with the Ball Animal 2, it is even stronger.

Deep cleaning in all types of carpet fibers means a clean that lasts. The Ball is easy to push and if you need to clean other areas, the extension hoses and cleaning tools allow you to get on stairs, clean your furniture or even in your car.

In the case of the Animal 2 you get the standard tools but also the turbine cleaning tool. This is a miniature motorized cleaning head useful for pet hair, upholstery and furniture.

Because there isn’t a battery and the unit relies on a corded power supply, you can clean until the job is done. There isn’t a need to stop and recharge.

The  Ball series also boast a huge half-gallon collection bin.  Less time with maintenance and more time cleaning makes your chores that much easier.

6. Dyson Ball Multi-Floor 2

The Dyson Ball Multi-Floor 2 is a lesser model compared to the Ball Animal 2 listed above. The same cleaning prowess is there, but there are less accessories and fewer capabilities.

With this model you will save a bit of cash, but you lose the turbine hand tool.  If you don’t have pets or the need for a small upholstery cleaning tool, then the Multi-Floor 2 is perfect for you.  It still has the increased suction and cleaning abilities.

The direct drive cleaning head automatically adjusts to the floor type to create a type of seal. This seal allows for increased and pinpoint airflow suction. By using this floor-hugging ability you get a deeper clean in less time, with less effort.

The ball still rolls smoothly over all floor types. However, the Multi-Floor 2 is smaller than the Ball Animal 2. The reduced size means you may need more passes over an open floor space, but it allows for even more control and a better turning radius.

7. Best Dyson Vacuum for Pets and Pet Hair – Dyson V11 Animal

Coming back with the V-series, which are arguably the best Dyson vacuums ever made. The V11 takes from the V10 and maintains the design as well as performance factors. However, it introduces a new edge over previous models.

The V11 Animal is an expensive vacuum, but the reward and cleaning ability more than make up for it. You can also get the V11 Outsize.  This is a powerful vacuum with a click-in battery, up to 2 hours of run time (with 2 batteries) a collection bin 150% larger and wider, more powerful cleaning heads.

The V11 Animal, though, is more standard and easier to control. Like the V10 you get up to 60 minutes of runtime and the inline collection bin to create more power.

The Animal comes with the new high-torque brush roll cleaning head for better performance on carpeting. You also get the crevice tool, combination tool, dusting brush and miniature cleaning head.

The added spin in the torque head gives you ultimate cleaning ability on hard flooring surfaces and the V11 is designed as a whole-home cleaning machine.

From floors, to curtains and furniture or overhead, the V11 is one of the ultimate vacuums available. You just have to pay for it.

8. Dyson V6 Motorhead

Like our top pick, the V6 Motorhead is  one of the most budget-friendly Dyson V-series models available . Unlike the top pick, this V6 lacks most of the needed tools and accessories, making it less of a cost effective deal.

You still get the same power and performance as the V6 Absolute, with up to 20 minutes cleaning time per charge and ability to clean any floor type.

However,  the V6 Motorhead is designed more for hard flooring surfaces than it is carpet . This doesn’t mean it can’t clean carpet, though. Low and medium-pile carpet are still cleaned well. It just doesn’t clean as well as the other models.

Included with your purchase is the combination tool, which acts as a cleaning brush and a crevice tool. All other accessories and cleaning heads must be purchased separately. If you go this route, it becomes more expensive than the all-inclusive Absolute model.

However, for smaller spaces such as apartments, and for those looking to have a Dyson vacuum without all the fuss and expense of the latest models, the V6 Animal will serve you well in almost every situation.

Care and Maintenance for Your Dyson Vacuum

Dyson makes it easy to care for your vacuum. The collection bin, filters and cleaning heads are all designed for easy access and cleaning when needed.

You should have a regular maintenance regimen that includes inspection and cleaning of the vacuum. Replace worn parts or damaged pieces as soon as you find them and your Dyson vacuum will last you for years to come.

  • Empty the collection bin before it reaches the fill line. This will help the filters perform better, and keep the airflow maximized to increase suction.
  • Charge the battery (if equipped) after every use. Avoid using the vacuum until the battery is completely charged.
  • Remove and clean the filter. Inspect the filter for damage, tears or worn areas and replace as needed.
  • Inspect the wheels on the cleaning heads and remove any tangles or build-up.
  • Remove the rollers and clear out any wrapped hairs or strings.
  • Clean out the suction tubes and wipe free of dust or debris.
  • Reassemble the vacuum and wipe down the body with a clean cloth.
  • Inspect the power cord (if equipped) or charging station for damage. Replace or repair as needed.

How Dyson Vacuum Cyclonic Suction Works

The  Dyson vacuums use the patented Dual Cyclone collection method . What does this mean, exactly? Let’s find out.

The motor spins creating air flow from the cleaning head, tool or wand, through the cyclone and filter area. The air enters at an angle and is pushed through the first layer of cones.

This angle and force causes the dirty air to spin, creating centrifugal force. Physics tells us that during this spinning, the heavier particles will fall while lighter ones will rise.

The dirt and debris collected with the air will fall through the cones into the collection bin. The lighter dirty air will then rise into the second set of cones. Here, centrifugal force is repeated, pushing the air through the filter materials.

The pre-filter captures the largest of the particles while the HEPA filter collects the smaller ones. The clean air is then pushed through the exhaust and back into the room.

The entire process makes the vacuum more efficient. By using physics, the air continuously moves, dust and debris are separated and air flow is never disrupted. This means that suction power doesn’t decrease because of air restrictions.

Frequently Asked Questions about Dyson Vacuums

Below, I answer some of the most common questions about Dyson and their vacuums. If you need more answers, please make use of the comment section below the article.

Q. Can I adjust the suction on a Dyson Vacuum?

  1. During operation you can adjust the power level of the motor. This will automatically adjust the vacuum for the floor type you choose. However, it will also cause the battery to drain faster (on higher power levels).

Q. How do you empty the collection bin on a Dyson?

  1. At the top of each canister will be a small thumb-switch. Push this lever in the direction indicated to release the collection bin latch. The bin will then pull out and up for removal. After you empty the bin, install the bottom first and push the canister in place until the latch locks.

Q. How do I know what my Dyson model number is?

  1. You will need to locate the serial number label affixed to your machine. The serial number itself will have the model number listed as the first 5 digits of this number. Use the model number when ordering replacement parts or making a warranty claim.

Q. How long will Dyson warranty my vacuum?

  1. Unless otherwise specifically stated during your purchase, the Dyson warranty covers the vacuum for a period of 5-years.

Q. How long will a Dyson vacuum battery last?

  1. The average lifespan of a battery for your Dyson vacuum will vary between 2 and 5 years. The average expectancy is 3 years, based on normal use, recharging and overall general care for the machine.
